“SO, WHAT now? What do we do next?”
Carter had managed not to ask any more questions during the drive back to his building. But just barely. He had wanted to drill Felix—pun not intentional but totally appreciated—on all kinds of things, but it had been a lot of years, and any claim he had on him had been part of another life. He figured he had forfeited even the most basic rights the day he packed up his car knowing full-well he wasn’t driving through to Illinois. Or maybe that hadn’t been until the first time loneliness had driven him out of his apartment and into someone’s bed.
That had been when he’d given up on the dream of things ever being different. It had been the moment he had realized that he was waiting for something that was never going to happen.
“Nothing.” Felix looked over. “Here’s where we part ways.”
“Here?” It took Carter a moment to process the words, pulling into his normal spot outside his building. “Forever?”
“Yes.”
“That’s it? You broke into my place last night, and now I’m never going to see you again?” Carter was glad that his voice sounded so normal. He wanted Felix to be completely taken by surprise when he popped an artery or something right there parked outside his building.
I don’t know, officer. We were just sitting there talking, and all of a sudden, I heard a sound like a champagne bottle exploding and I was covered in blood, the blood of a talented artist.
Yes, sir, it was just like a KISS concert when they were at their prime.
“Can you tell me about this fiancé at least?” Yeah, he had no right to ask, but maybe then, knowing it was truly over, he could move on.
“It’s… complicated. And none of your business.”
“Okay.” Carter stared straight ahead, squeezing and releasing the steering wheel with the thump-thump of his heart. It was beating steadily, if a little quickly, and it was good to focus on the positives.
“Well.” Felix sounded almost cheerful, and Carter ventured a quick glance. “Thank you. Honestly. You, no doubt, saved me a lot of time.”
“Yeah, maybe.” Carter was unsure of what to do now.
“Have a nice life.” Felix actually smiled. “I mean it.”
Felix moved to open the door, and before he could talk himself out of it, Carter leaned over to press his mouth against that of a very startled Felix. His lips were warm and soft, and he somehow still tasted familiar, still tasted like he had so many years ago.
Felix pulled away, the look of surprise replaced by something closed off and unreadable.
“Hey, it was my last chance, right?” Carter opened his door. “Sorry I fucked whatever it was up.”
Instead of waiting for a response, he jogged to his stoop, let himself inside, and bolted the door behind him.
